Top of the Bots; Top 10 War for Cybertron Toys Part 2
Now it's time to look at what I consider to be the top 5 War for Cybertron toys, if you missed numbers 10-6, check it out here!
5. Earthrise Starscream
Now granted, I own the Studio Series 86 Starscream, but it is the Earthrise toy bar a slightly different blue and opening hands, and they haven't factored into my decision. Regardless of these factors those this is an amazing toy. The robot mode is incredibly loyal to the Sunbow design and has fantastic articulation and posability. The head sculpt is pure Starscream, the effort put into this shines through.
Transformation is a breeze and fun to do, feels like an updated take on the classics version. Once transformed we have the beautiful jet mode. This is amazing looking, for a jet Transformer there is minimal robot on show underneath. The design of this toy is amazing in almost every way, just some loose legs on the wings causing them to pop out occasionally being its main downfall.
4. Earthrise Optimus Prime
Of course Earthrise Prime had to be on this list. If there is one toy HasTak will put all their budget into, it'll be Optimus Prime, and it shows. To me this is the quintessential G1 Optimus Prime, and I can't see myself replacing him anytime soon. The robot mode is stunning, paint on point, high articulation and a real step up from the seige version, which I won't get into here.
Transformation is well engineered and a fantastic process with lots of G1 nods to the process. Once you have him in his alt mode it is beautiful, amazing sculpting detail, paint really shining through and having a trailer to boot. Yeah, I think I'll be holding onto this toy for quite some time
3. Kingdom Cyclonus
Now this is great toy design. A fantastic, animation accurate robot mode. Like truly, great design. This is the definitive Cyclonus, a truly striking robot mode with great colours. Some of the best articulation in the line. I am just awed by this toy.
Transformation is well engineered but not very intuitive, and for me, a bit difficult to remember, but once it is transformed, oh boy. How they managed to achieve this, is astounding. There is no sign of the robot mode present, all you have, is this space jet, and it is magnificent.
The temptation to get the Gen Selects toy colour version is very strong.
2. Netflix Soundwave
Something that was very illusive for many people, that unfortunately was a fantastic toy. This was actually the second Transformers toy I got, after Gigawatt, when I got back into collecting Transformers, and I was spoilt for 2 great modern figures to restart my collection with.
The robot mode is amazing looking, great colours, great sculpt, I love the head sculpt and accessory wise there are the battery guns, another blaster that I've heard is supposed to be alt mode Megatron(?) As well as Ravage and Laserbeak.
Transformation is fun and easy to remember, and all the accessories can be stored with interfering the alt mode appearance. To me this is the ultimate Soundwave, I love this design, i love that it turns into a cassette player, I love that it comes with and can store the cassette-cons. Having this toy made my inner child incredibly.
Honourable mentions
Before we move on to the no.1 spot, let's have a look at some toys that didn't quite make the cut
Kingdom Rattrap
I really enjoyed this toy and it is a fantastic update to the original Beast Wars toy. Very simple very fun toy that was something I had to have and is something I'm glad I got. Reasons it isn't in this list is is a bit too simple a toy and the first time I transformed it, the head split open turning it around.
Netflix Spoiler Megatron
Megatron is my favourite Transformers character, every iteration, so I'm incredibly happy to have this in my collection. Amazing robot mode, great toy to play about with and really looks the part. Didn't make the list due to lack luster transformation and an ok looking tank mode. I think I would have liked the look of the Earthrise Tank but I don't own an Earthrise mould.
Kingdom T-Wrecks
When Kingdom Predacon Megatron was announced, I was gooped. Instantly in love with the toy, but I've made a collecting goal to get the vintage toys for the TV characters, which left me conflicted, what do I do? Do I buy it and break my collecting goal? Thankfully HasTak had me covered and announced T-Wrecks. This is a great toy. Fun to play about with, magnificent detailing, great articulation, fantastic engineering. Only reason it didn't make the cut is I find it difficult to transform.
1. Generations Selects Rotorstorm
Yes if you've been following me for a while you may have seen this coming. I adore this. This was an 'item on sale' purchase for me where I thought "hey, a cheap toy of an obscure character? why not!", and it turned out to be a fantastic decision.
Look at the colours, this is G2/G1.5 at its finest, we need more of this, give me more wild vibrant mis-match colour characters. The articulation is everything you need for the toy, it poses brilliantly. The sculpting is fantastic, I love the double cockpit shins adding symmetry to the design. The face sculpt it amazing, I love the shades, the look of it just screams 90s.
Transformation is well planned out and takes a bit of getting use to, I'll admit. But the helicopter mode is beautiful. This is an attack copter that doesn't need to hide. Utilising the guns as the main weapons of the vehicle is the best kind of weapon storage. If you have the chance to get this figure I highly recommended it
